Chapter Fifteen

MISAKA

The agony is what called me to the alley. The soul screamed for aid. I was so focused on the differences in it and any of the others I’ve seen that she caught me.

Her soul was black and oily, a thing of pure evil. It washed over me, wrapping me in a darkness that choked me, that terrified me. I could just make out the screams of the others as they arrived. I had traveled as a reaper, leaving them to make their own way to me, trusting Charlie to guide them.

She had; it had just taken too long.

The Fallen one had wrapped me in beautiful white wings just as they appeared. I felt the strange magic pull us from the alley before I could say anything. My powers were bound by the same magic. I can’t just float away.

I don’t know where she takes me. Others are here waiting for her.

“Look what I brought.” She sounds gleeful. “Introduce yourself.” She spins me, and I see more evil.

I don’t speak, refusing to play their game.

“Oh, goody, she wishes to fight.” A red-haired angel grins, and she looks like a shark.

“Luz, wait your turn.”

“Raphaela, you won’t let us have any fun. You brought us here to this city, and we are stuck in this house. The sinners are calling us, begging for us to judge them, but we can’t leave this godforsaken house because of some game you’re playing. Who is she?”

I feel the anger of the one holding me, Raphaela, surge at the other woman’s words. Her fingers dig into my flesh, nails cutting, and I can feel the blood running from the half-moon wounds.

“They think she is one of the spawn from traitors.” The others straighten and glare at me. “I don’t know if she is, but she did appear out of thin air in front of me while I was looking at an angel that had been eviscerated and left on display.”

“What?” A woman in the back against the wall pushes off it and starts our way. “What do you mean, an angel?”

“I’ve seen him before. I was going to recruit him, just haven’t had time. I was busy with Zeph and the magic.” I know by her tone that this one is their leader.

My thought is confirmed in seconds when she steps in front of me and Raphaela releases my arm. I look up at the tall, gorgeous woman and I can see the hatred in her. I can tell, unlike some of the others, she isn’t or wasn’t always evil, but her hatred has eaten away all of her goodness.

“And how did your ploy work? Is Zeph out of commission? Dead?” The woman raises her eyebrows, and I can tell she doesn’t like that Raphaela doesn’t answer immediately.

“I think so. I can’t feel him pulling at the magic anymore.” I listen closely to what she says, trying to get any information to help Zeph. “Theon said it would take a few days to break him and then a while longer to burn him out completely.
